...of abundance and of prosperity. The Goddess was venerated in all Greece and hers festivals were celebrate with joy and fervour.
Dèmetra had a daughter named Kore, conceived with Zeus. Ade, God of Hells, was insanely in love with the young girl but Dèmetra was against this marriage. One day Kore was picking flowers when Ade kidnapped her and brought her to Hell where they got married. The infernal Kore took the name of Persefone.
Dèmetra, destroyed by the pain, abandoned the Olympus in renouncing to her divine functions and tried to find her only daughter. While the Goddess was wandering all over the world dressed like an old woman the Earth became arid and poor. Zeus tried to convince her to go back on her decisions but, as he was unable to do it, he was forced to ask Ade to let Persefone return to her mother sending Hermes as messenger in the underground world. At the end a compromise was reached: Persefone would spend four month with Ade (wintertime) and the rest of the year with Dèmetra. This is how the seasons were born.
